You’re on Tumblr
There’s no professional reason to be on tumblr. And if you did have a professional reason to be on tumblr, it wouldn’t be your personal account. Use tumblr to inspire new projects, not to distract from what you’re already doing.
You’re Doing Chores
Nothing makes getting on your knees and scrubbing a toilet sound better than having a different, more important, responsibility that you don’t want to do. You’re not necessarily doing a bad thing, but you’re definitely procrastinating.
You’ve Been Watching Netflix for 3 Hours
Taking a break to watch one episode? Sure, you deserve it. Watching a second? Hey, the last episode was a cliffhanger, you couldn’t have focused if you didn’t know how it ends. But once you’re on that third episode or second movie, you’re done for. Break that cycle and get back to work!
You’re Accepting Invitations You Never Would Have Otherwise
“Racist cousin Larry’s in town? Oh man, I haven’t seen him in years, we should hang out!”
“Oh, you’re going to a 9 hour performance piece of a man artfully clipping his fingernails? Sounds tantalizing, take me with you!”
We will go through hell in the spirit of not attending to our responsibilities: and it is never, ever, worth it. Take care of business first, Nanny’s monthly knitting circle will still be there when you’re done.
You Linger On Other Tasks Longer Than Usual
Ah, just finished the grocery list… or did you? Maybe today’s the day you finally clip out all the helpful coupons in the catalogue, or examine every individual fruit in the produce section to make sure you found the perfect hand of bananas. There are plenty of ways to procrastinate by getting work done, and this is one of them. It doesn’t count as being productive if you would have never done it otherwise!
